Renowned Werner Herzog Filmed in Postojna Cave, Slovenia
Director and screenwriter Werner Herzog, who will receive the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at this year’s Venice Film Festival (27 August – 6 September), chose Postojna Cave as one of the key locations for his latest film, “Bucking Fastard”, starring Katie and Rooney Mara. “This is the most incredible cave in the world,” he said.
”Bucking Fastard is a film that, for me, completes a circle in an operatic triptych with my previous films, Fitzcarraldo and Grizzly Man,”Herzog told the media outlet Deadline. Critics are convinced that the film represents an outstanding achievement – something truly original, with a surprising blend of humor and fantasy.
The film, shot on stunning locations in Ireland and Slovenia, explores the search for the meaning of life. “We cannot see the world as Jean and Joan Holbrooke (portrayed by Katie and Rooney Mara) see it, but we do see how the world reacts to them — through the courts and the press, through those that want to help and those who want to use them, through the eyes of beasts both tame and wild, and even through their own echoes in the core of the earth.” said the director.
Herzog identified the core of the Earth in Postojna Cave, Slovenia — widely regarded as one of the most spectacular caves in the world, known for its extraordinary formations, unique fauna, legendary underground train, and the only still-operating underground post office in existence.
After the filming concluded in late April 2025, Herzog was welcomed by Kaja Batagelj, Director at the Postojnska jama d.d., who is both an avid fan of Herzog's work and took part in the shoot as an extra. During the warm encounter, Werner Herzog also signed the Cave’s Golden book of VIP visitors, leaving a heartfelt message:
“Thank you so much for allowing me to film in your cave. Postojna Cave is the most incredible cave in the world. It is the place of wonders and poetry.”
In the film “Bucking Fastard,” Orlando Bloom and Domhnall Gleeson also star alongside the Mara sisters.
